Class 2 biological safety cabinets are designed to protect both the operator and the product during sensitive procedures, and can be configured as either ducted to a building extract system or as recirculating units. In this case, a customer required all the benefits of a Class 2 cabinet but faced a unique combination of challenges:

  • No access to a building extract system
  • Limited height clearance in the room
  • Restricted floor space due to the size of the room
  • A process involving small quantities of formaldehyde

Our team was tasked with designing a solution that would deliver full protection in a highly constrained space, whilst also considering the safe handling of formaldehyde in the absence of an extract system.

project goals

The key objectives of this project were: 

  • Operator and Product Protection: To ensure a safe working environment when handling hazardous materials including formaldehyde 

  • Compact, Space-Efficient Design: To fit within both narrow and low-clearance areas whilst providing a usable workspace

  • Flexible Installation: To enable the customer to position and move the unit as needed

To meet all requirements, we designed a 900mm-wide Class 2 cabinet featuring: 

  • A recirculating airflow design, eliminating the need for connection to an external extract system 

  • A molecular active carbon filtration system to filter formaldehyde vapours, mounted to the side of the cabinet to accommodate the room’s height restrictions 

  • A compact footprint that maintains ample internal working space despite the narrow width 

  • A support stand on wheeled castors to allow easy relocation and flexible positioning

This tailored class 2 biological safety cabinet with additional carbon filtration provided the customer with a compact, cost-effective, and highly effective solution, delivering full protection without the need to modify their existing process or infrastructure.
