Double sided Class 3 Biological Safety Cabinet

Traditionally, Class 3 biological safety cabinets enable the handling of high-hazard materials under full containment, with access provided from one side of the cabinet. However, a customer approached us with a unique requirement: their process would be significantly more efficient if multiple operators could work simultaneously while facing one another.

To meet this dual-access need, without compromising on safety or efficiency, our team designed a fully custom solution.

Project Goals

The key objectives of this project were: 

  • Full Sealed Containment: To ensure maximum protection for both the operators and the environment when handling high-risk materials. 

  • Dual-Sided Access: To allow teams to work collaboratively, face-to-face, from opposite sides of the cabinet. 

  • Operational Efficiency: To enable smooth, ergonomic workflows and safe transfer of materials without breaking containment. 

The Result

Our engineering and design teams developed a bespoke double-sided Class 3 cabinet, featuring: 

  • Four glove ports on each side for simultaneous, collaborative operation.

  • Full-width glass viewing panels to maintain visibility and communication between operators.

  • A built-in side transfer hatch for secure material movement in and out of containment.

  • A strategically placed access door that could be efficiently used from either side.

  • Integrated internal data and service connections alongside power sockets, supporting the equipment and digital tools required for the customer’s process.
