FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Choosing the right biological safety cabinet (BSC) depends on your application, containment needs, and available workspace. A full health and safety audit and site-specific risk assessment by a qualified professional are essential to determine the best solution for your application. Whether it’s determined you need a Class 1 2 or 3, our experts can then work with you to ensure the BSC you receive meets your exact requirements. You may also find this guide, cabinets explained, helpful.
Yes, biological safety cabinets can be used to handle hazardous substances, but certain models are better suited for this task. Class II BSCs provide excellent protection for working with biological agents and certain substances, while Class I BSCs are suitable for non-volatile substances. If you are handling highly toxic or volatile substances, you may need a Class III BSC for maximum containment. A full health and safety audit and site-specific risk assessment by a qualified professional are essential to determine the best solution for your application.

Absolutely! We offer bespoke biological safety cabinets that can be customised to suit specific applications. Whether you need additional shelving, lighting, or a particular size to fit your space, our team will work with you to design and manufacture a BSC unit that meets your exact requirements. See some of our previous custom solutions here.

We offer a range of in-stock ‘off–the–shelf’ biological safety cabinets for quick delivery.  For standard UK orders, you could receive your new fully operational biological safety cabinet in as little as 1 month. We can also remove and dispose of your old unit, ensuring a seamless, quick, and hassle-free replacement. For custom BSC orders, we’ll work closely with you to ensure a timely and efficient installation.

The lifespan of a biological safety cabinet can be influenced by factors such as usage, maintenance, and the environment in which it operates. However, regular maintenance—including filter replacements, the use of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts, performance testing, and annual certification—plays a crucial role in extending the BSC’s lifespan and ensuring it remains compliant with safety standards. Many of our BSCs have been in use for 20-30 years+ and continue to deliver reliable performance.

Our service team will be happy to arrange your fully comprehensive service package to keep your BSC performing at its best.

Carbon filtration can be integrated into your Biological Safety Cabinet to help filter out gases, odors, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) specific to your application. This is particularly beneficial for labs working with chemical vapors or processes that generate airborne contaminants beyond biological agents. Our team can assess your needs and provide filters specifically manufactured to target the compounds relevant to your application.

Biological safety cabinets require regular maintenance to ensure they continue to operate effectively and safely. It is recommended that they be serviced a minimum of once per year, with twice-yearly servicing required for cabinets located in Category 3 laboratories. Regular servicing ensures that the BSC is functioning optimally, maintains safety standards, and complies with BS EN 12469 standards.

Our service team can arrange a fully comprehensive service package, tailored to your needs, ensuring your BSC continues to meet all safety regulations and performance standards.

To maintain optimal performance and protect your personnel and processes, regular maintenance is essential—required every 12 months. Discover our comprehensive service packages to keep your cabinet operating at peak efficiency and your work environment fully safeguarded.
