Helping laboratories reduce Carbon
We are delighted to announce that the new BioMAT2 Class
2 Microbiological Safety Cabinet has been awarded Carbon-Neutral®
product certification by measuring all production emissions and
then reducing them to net zero. In achieving this
certification we hope that we can make a significant contribution
to our customers needs for verifiable carbon reduction within your
laboratory facilities.
As you may know we introduced the latest generation of the BioMAT2
Class 2 Microbiological Safety Cabinet earlier this year.
From the earliest design stage we included a commitment to product
carbon footprint reduction as an integral part of the research and
development programme. The UK government has committed to
reducing CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050. As non-domestic
buildings account for one fifth of CO2 emissions a significant
burden will fall on building owners to demonstrate ongoing carbon
reduction towards this target. Legislation is already in
place under the Climate Change Act 2008 and the CRC Energy
Efficiency scheme for both new buildings and existing
facilities. Laboratories are traditionally high consumers of
energy and therefore any development in carbon reduction technology
would make a valid contribution to these goals both for new
laboratories and for existing facilities.
Our approach to carbon reduction of our new Class 2 Cabinet
is threefold:-
Production Materials & Processes Reduction
All materials used within the new BioMAT2 have been carefully
selected in order to minimise embedded carbon emissions wherever
possible. As CAS is a UK manufacturer with our main suppliers
within a 50 mile radius, emissions resulting from product transport
and logistics are also minimised. Whilst obviously
maintaining domestic engineering skills, employment and
contributing to our national economy, cabinet production within the
UK is also very beneficial in reducing carbon emissions as
transportation emissions are massively reduced when compared to
imported products.
Reduce Carbon Footprint to Net Zero
To achieve Carbon-Neutral® product certification CAS worked with
the CarbonNeutral Company, one of the world's leading carbon
reduction providers, to measure and reduce product carbon emissions
to net zero. All emissions related to the product including
cradle to grave embodied emissions of raw materials, energy
consumption, waste and logistics were quantified, reduced wherever
possible and then measured. Annual production emissions were
then reduced to net zero by carbon offsetting. This ensures
that for every tonne of CO2 emitted by supply of a BioMAT2 Safety
Cabinet an equivalent CO2 amount is saved.
The offsetting projects selected by CAS include a biogas to energy
project in Thailand plus a One Nature reduction portfolio which
consists of renewable energy projects such as solar, wind and
hydropower projects.

"In Use" phase Emissions
We introduced significant design improvements in fan technology,
electronic lighting and controls within the new BioMAT2 resulting
in a power consumption of just 190W. Overall "in use"
emissions however are obviously governed primarily by cabinet users
in terms of operational hours, exhaust systems employed and other
environmental factors affecting cabinet power consumption. We
are happy to discuss individual installations with facility
operators to offer advice on minimising use phase CO2 emissions
wherever possible. This brings the obvious benefits of both
reducing the facilities carbon footprint and also your energy bills
associated with cabinet operations.
Summary
We recognise that environmental sustainability of products and
processes will become of ever increasing concern to laboratory
users in future years. Current and impending legislation will
impose stringent carbon reduction targets on laboratory owners,
both for new build and existing facilities. We hope that by
introducing the first Carbon-Neutral® Class 2 Microbiological
Safety Cabinet we can make a valid contribution to laboratory
carbon reduction, adding real value to the products and services we
